This time of the year is a time of joyous celebration for many college and high school students. For some it is graduation and for others it is simply getting through finals. Either way, there is a potential for students to be with others that may be old enough to drink. That means the minor may be in a vehicle with an open container of alcohol. The ticket may say possession of opened container if they are over 21, or in some circumstances the possession of alcoholic beverage in vehicle; persons under 21. These California Vehicle Code sections are all misdemeanors and carry a penalty of up to $1,000 and six months of imprisonment. For some teens, there car could be towed and impounded for up to 30 days. That gets expensive! The key is for everyone to offer each other a gentle reminder of how these wonderful days can be a bit of a bummer if you forget that you simply cannot be around alcohol, or better yet, a vehicle with alcohol in it.
